Nestled on a sunlit southern slope high above Engelberg, Switzerland, Villa Hundert Boutique Mountainscape is one of those places that causes time to slow down, or maybe it’s just the altitude. Perched at about 1,218 m elevation, this intimate nine‑room boutique hotel welcomed us with warmth and personal hospitality.

A Warm Welcome at Villa Hundert
Our hosts John, Christian, and Anna Lisa—originally from Sweden and Canada—greeted us like friends they hadn’t seen in a while. Whisked upstairs to our suite, we found a calming Nordic-Alpine style, complete with a great bed and incredible mountain views.
While we didn’t use the kitchenette, it was a lovely touch, along with a comfortable living and conversation area. Each detail—from candles and flower arrangements to natural materials and design books—was mindfully curated.
Discovering a Culinary Gem in Engelberg

We arrived without lunch, having just flown in from the United States the previous night. We asked Christian if we could get a little something to tide us over until dinner. Imagine our astonishment when the cheese and charcuterie board he presented us was a marvel of tasty local treats assembled with an artistic eye.
And then there was dinner. Dinner at Villa Hundert is an innovative, multi-course menu crafted from foraged, local ingredients, seasonal creativity, and culinary flair. We started with a lovely Riesling, Pascal Zurcher, on the terrace surrounded by incredible mountains (and blankets for when the sun dipped behind the hills).

We then shifted into the dining room. Seated around a long table, we feasted on dishes like asparagus with walnuts, tallow, and dried rose petals (all of which were edible, of course). The onion plum bread was served alongside Jerusalem artichokes, apricots, and fig leaves. A very special pork dish featuring jalapenos and fava beans captured the essence of the menu, with a hyper-focus on local food and a fascinating and tasty addition of innovative ingredients.

Breakfast the next morning complemented the evening’s dinner artistry with fresh, hearty regional flavors and lots of delicious espresso to wake up after all of the wine pairings from the night before.
Exploring Nearby Engelberg Village: What To See, What To Do, and Where to Eat

The Villa is situated approximately 2.3 miles from the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first rotating cable car, offering easy access to various adventures—whether skiing, snowshoeing, high-altitude hiking, or mountain biking in the warmer months.
Or, you can do what we did and ride the cable car for a glass of wine at the Trübsee middle station at the Restaurant Untertrübsee. It’s a cozy and inviting spot with great views, perfect for savoring an Aperol Spritz.

The historic Engelberg village with its 12th‑century Benedictine monastery is a scenic 15‑minute walk downhill, and you can take the free bus back uphill.Engelberg’s name originated from a legend associated with the monastery’s founding in 1120. According to folklore, a nobleman from Zürich was searching for a location to establish a Benedictine monastery, and he had a vision. It is said that he saw angels singing and descending upon a mountain meadow in the valley. Armed with this otherworldly guidance, he chose the site for the monastery and named the place Engelberg—literally, Engel (meaning “angel”) + Berg (meaning “mountain”).

Today, lots of charming shops and places to stop for coffee or lunch can be found in the village. And if you collect angels, you will find them in all mediums, shapes, and sizes. We grabbed a pizza and a beer at the Gasthaus Engel, right outside the doors of the monastery. The next day, we had fondue at the Alpenclub’s Fondue Stube in their traditional alpine-style wood-paneled rooms.
If you are looking for a change of pace, try Siam Thai Cuisine at the Hotel Waldegg, a short walk from the Villa (at least downhill on the way there). In addition to excellent Thai food, the restaurant has a panoramic view of Engelberg.
